after appearing in a couple warren miller films in his early teens, kevin kerslake embarked on a path to emulate miller and his other childhood hero, bruce (endless summer) brown, making surf, skate and ski films throughout his hormonal years. graduating with a degree in film from loyola marymount university, kerslake became one of a handful of directors responsible for forging the visual identity of the mtv generation.
developing a diverse body of work infused with the urgency and kineticism of his earlier pursuits but now working within larger themes, kerslake directed award-winning videos for such distinguished bands as nirvana, green day, prince, r.e.m., the rolling stones and the red hot chili peppers.
a surf film for quiksilver and the first of two DOCS on insomniac events’ electric daisy carnival launched a move into client-direct branded content where kerslake created multi-platform campaigns for nike, puma, sprite, dc shoes, vevo, coca-cola, sony playstation and hyundai, plus advocacy projects involving doctors without borders, homeboy industries, peta, insight prison project, keep a child alive and amnesty international.
other documentaries include a number of iconic music and core culture films, notably as i am: the life and times of dj am, nirvana: live! tonight! sold out!, the ramones: were outta here!, the electric daisy carnival experience, and a profile on joan jett, bad reputation. his doc for hyundai and universal music group on the making of bob marley & the wailers’ legend remixed won two clio awards.
in scripted film & television, kerslake directed dean devlin & roland emmerich’s the visitor on fox and disney/abc’s 4-hour fallen miniseries starring paul wesley and bryan cranston, plus shouldered writing duties for warner bros, bbc, sony, paramount, ed pressman, and quentin tarantino’s a band apart.
kerslake’s still portraits of david bowie, nick cave, sting, neil young, james cameron, henry rollins, peter beard, quentin tarantino and many others have appeared in magazines and photography exhibits throughout the world
